One New York County Behind Over A Million in Child Support Payments

Why does Nassau County have $1.2 million in undisbursed child support payments?

If you receive child support payments, it might have been a real battle to get the financial help your child is entitled to.  There may have been countless arguments, meeting with your lawyer, court hearings and paper filings during the process.  At this time your child’s other parent has been making the designated payments so all is running smoothly, right?  Wrong!  Now, the county in which you live is holding over a million dollars in undisbursed child support payments.

When a court orders child support, the responsible parent pays the designated amount to the State of New York.  Each county then receives the appropriate amount from the state so that it can disburse the payments to the entitled parent.  Over the last two years, Nassau County, by way of Nassau Department of Social Services, has collected millions in child support payments from the state.  But, a review ranging from January of 2013 to April of 2015 has revealed that the agency is holding back approximately $1.2 million in funds.  The investigation also found that the agency continuously failed to determine why these payments were delayed.

The agency blames the undisbursed payments on shortage of staff.  It claims that it once had enough workers to handle the undisbursed funds, but that now it does not.  Nassau DSS still claims to be working hard to clean up the mess though. New York officials, such as Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos, is putting pressure on the agency to ensure that those in need are getting the child support payments they are entitled to.

If you need assistance obtaining a child support order or dealing with undisbursed payments from DSS or any other agency you should speak with an experienced attorney today.  Contact a Nassau County family law and child support attorney today.
