Judge Ends Protracted Child Custody Battle Between Russian Oligarch and His Ex

How are custody disputes resolved?

A Stamford, Connecticut judge recently put an end to a four-year long custody dispute between oil and real estate mogul Shalva Chigirinsky and his former wife Tatiana Panchenkova.  The couple lives in Greenwich, Connecticut and shares four children, eight-year-old twins and daughters ages nine and 15.  During a two-day custody hearing presided over by Superior Court Judge Thomas Colin, some important observations were made in the high profile case.  The judge found that the parents had unfortunately become so preoccupied with their dislike for each other that concern for the children’s best interests had gone to the wayside.  According to Judge Colin, the kids lived in a shroud of anger and hatred due to the parents’ four-year custody battle.

As part of his plan to ensure the children come first, the judge ordered Chigirinsky and Panchenkova to display a family photo in the courtroom at each subsequent family court hearing.  The parents additionally reached a joint-custody settlement in which Chigirinsky will see the children every other weekend and Wednesdays after school.  Further, Chigirinsky must replace his current nanny and install cameras in the home. He will also undergo therapy with the nine-year-old daughter whom he has been charged with abusing, though the case is still pending.

Resolving Custody Disputes

The Chigirinsky-Panchenkova custody dispute is a prime example of how heated and contentious custody issues can become.  Child custody is often a tricky issue for divorcing couples due to the many emotions involved.  Generally, child custody disputes can be resolved in one of two ways:  by agreement or by a judge when the parents cannot agree.  Most child custody disagreements can be resolved through mediation and the help of an experienced family law attorney.  At times, however, parents will need to turn to a judge for an objective decision over what custody arrangement is best for their children.
